Barbers and Haircuts
German soldiers were expected to have their hair neatly cut at all times except when in active combat. One of the first things a front-line soldier did when he had the chance was to get his hair cut. Most units had skilled men who were barbers in their pre-service life who would cut hair and shave men for a fee. Men on leave would often go to get their hair professionally but before a big night on the town.

German soldiers wore their hair "shaved from the neck and tapered up to the top above the ears all the way around. The hair was usually very long on top, combed (& slicked) straight back from the forehead. If parted, the part is very high on the head." It was frequently slicked down with pomade.
