Blacksmith-Feldschmied

The German army had many men in support roles such as tailors (Schneider), Cobblers (Schuster), Leatherworkers (Sattler), Blacksmiths (Feldschmied), armorers (Waffenmeister), and other types of repairmen to fix the things that broke as a result of hard use or battle damage. The role of the Schmied was twofold. First, they were employed to make and repair iron and steel items for general use by the army. Second a more specialized role of Farrier (Hufschmied) was also employed. These men focused on manufacturing fitting and installing horseshoes. Of course, these men also did general ironwork when not so employed.  This role was obviously contained within cavalry and horse-drawn transportation units.

These photographs were taken from a number of online sources and auction sites.  They are presented here for educational purposes.
