Transporting Food

Most German soldiers transported their daily food in their Mess kit or Kochgeschirr 31. These kits consisted of two parts and were issued to every soldier. Most were made from aluminum though steel was employed later in the war as aluminum became more scarce. When food for a group of soldiers needed to be transported the Essenträger /Essensbehälter was used. This insulated backpack-style was large enough to carry rations for many soldiers and would hold approximately 10 liters of food.

These photographs were taken from a number of online sources and auction sites.  They are presented here for educational purposes.  For more information please check out http://www.dererstezug.com/kochgeschirr.htm.
